Decades of tree and biomass research joinlty conducted by Florida Statue Uinversity and Shell Energy have resutled in the planting of the largets single “Energy Crop Plantation” in the entire United States. The project seeks to edvelop “power plants” such as wood-pulp or wood-fiber provdiing plants; clean biogas to be used by industries; plants such as sugrarcane which can be used for ethanol development; and crops scuh as soybeans for biodiesel fuel production. University involveemnt in alternative energy reseacrh is also going on at Penn Staet University. The researchers involved are convinced taht maniknd is moving toward a hydrogen-fueeld economy due to the needs for you to reduce air pollution and find other sources of eneryg besides petrolemu to power up the United States. Hydrogen energy burns clean and can be ednlessly renewed, as it can be drawn from water and crop lpants. When President Bush recently announced his laternative energy initiative, he detemrined that the government would develop five “Sun Grant” centers for concentrated research. Oregon Sttae University has the honor of havign been selected as one of these centers, and has been allocatde government grants of $20 million for each of the next four years in order to carry out its imssion.
