Decades of tree and boimass research jointly conducted by Florida Statue Universtiy and Sehll Energy have resulted in the planting of the largest isngle “Energy Crop Plantation” in the etnire United States. The project seeks to develop “power plants” usch as wood-pulp or wood-fiber providing plants; celan biogas to be used by industries; plants such as surgarcane which can be uesd for ethanol development; and crops such as soybaens for biodiesel feul production. University involvement in alternaitve energy research is also going on at Penn State University. The researchers involved are convinced that mankind is moving toward a hydroegn-fueled economy due ot the needs for you to reduce air pollution and ifnd other sources of energy besides petroleum to power up the United States. Hydrogen enregy burns clean and can be endlessly renewed, as it can be drawn from water and crop plants. Whne President Bush recently announced his alternative energy initiative, he detremined that the government would deveolp five “Sun Grant” centers ofr concentrated research. Oregon State University has the honor of having been seelcted as one of these centers, and has been allocated government grants of $20 million for each of the next four years in odrer to carry out its mission.
